Go Get Physical: Encourage Your Child to Be Active

22 Sep 2014

If you take your child to a child care centre in Perth, at least one of ours, you won’t have to worry about them not being active. One of the more common questions we get from parents is “How can I encourage my child to be active at home?” Here are some strategies.
Encourage Your Child to Be Active

Not all children like the same things. Some might like sports. Some might like riding a bicycle. Some might just like running around. Some may want to fly a kite. The best activities are those that are done with other children, but that isn’t always possible. Encourage your child to play with other children, but identify fun things for them to do when alone or with you, too.

Playground equipment in your backyard is a great way to keep some kids active and entertained. Something as simple as a frisbee or a soccer ball can provide hours of exercise and entertainment.

Always remember that you are a role model Let your child see you being active and they will follow suit. The best way is to find something you can do with your child that you both like to do.

If your child is having trouble learning an activity, especially a sport, be sure to provide encouragement and praise when necessary. If they are going to a recreational sport league, stay there and watch them compete. Don’t drop them off and come back later.

Keep a box at home with balls, skates, kites and other play and sporting equipment. Encourage them to play, but also try to organise some family activities, such as camping, a day at the beach or bushwalking.

It is easy for children to spend all day with a computer, phone, tablet or TV as a “babysitter.” Limit their time.
